Edith Emeline
Nowack
July 25, 2017
Edith Emeline Nowack, age 89, a resident of Windsor Park in Carol Stream, IL, joined the Heavenly Choir on Tuesday, July 25, 2017. Born at home in 1927 in Watertown, WI, Edith proudly told those she met that Watertown was the site of the first kindergarten in the U.S.
Her strong Christian faith was nurtured in childhood and adolescence in the Moravian Church, with summer youth camp at Chetek being one of her favorite memories. Edith remained a lifelong member of the Watertown Moravian Church.
After graduating from Watertown High School in 1945, she attended Wheaton College in Wheaton, IL and graduated in 1949. Edith utilized her Christian Education degree working for the National Office of the Moravian Church in Bethlehem, PA. She took a leave of absence to attend The Biblical Seminary in New York, NYC, earning a Master of Religious Education degree in 1958.
Edith went on to additional post-graduate work, and taught 4th and 5th grades in Watertown and Wheaton. As an avid world traveler, Edith was able to share many experiences with her students. She touched lives at Holmes and Longfellow Schools in Wheaton for 17 years, retiring in 1986.
Active in retirement, Edith continued to travel and also volunteered in various capacities on the Alumni Board of Wheaton College and at College Church in Wheaton. Her travels and teaching background enhanced her role as a long-time E.S.L. tutor, where she continued to touch lives and make lasting friendships. Among her other varied interests and activities were a love of nature, longstanding friendships through a birding group, classical choral & orchestral music, and the Wheaton History Club.
Edith is survived by 17 nieces and nephews and numerous grandnieces and grandnephews. She was the "baby" of the family, and was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and three sisters.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, July 31 at 2:00 p.m. in the Windsor Park Auditorium located at 130 Windsor Park Drive, Carol Stream, IL. Private interment will be held at Oak Hill Cemetery in Watertown.
