Obituary

Edith H. Fitts, age 78, a longtime resident of Wheaton, grew up in Barrington, graduated from Barrington High School, University of Michigan and later from DePaul University. Upon graduating from U of M, Edie found her dream job at J Walter Thompson Ad agency in Chicago. She married Jay Fitts in 1957, moved to Wheaton, raised two girls and then went back into marketing as an Ad Exec at Hart Marx. She spent several years at the Elgin Symphony as marketing director, and later formed her own marketing company.

Trinity Church was a big part of her life. She served numerous roles there, became a deacon and sang in the choir. The ministry and her first cancer battle led her to become involved at Y-Me, a Breast Cancer support organization, where she spent 12 years as a hotline counselor. During this time she was highly involved with a national oncology research group that conducted field trials of various options for breast cancer patients.

Edie was an avid lover and patron of the arts: classical music, opera, jazz; and song. She was a performing member of the DuPage Chorale, served on several committees at Wheaton College Artists program, City of Wheaton artistic support group and the DuPage Community Foundation. She was a supporter of Wheaton Drama, and had her dream "gig" as one of the singing nuns in the Sound Of Music.

Edie was a member of the Morton Arboretum, the Bonsai Association and the Chicago Art Institute. She had culinary talent and Italy was one favorite travel spot for cooking school. Earlier travels cultivated friendships in Portugal.

She was predeceased by her husband Jay, and her sister Nancy Larson. She is survived by her two daughters, Holly McQuestion (Dave) and granddaughter Rachael Bushnell of Lake Zurich, and Julie Mariano (Rick) and grandson Jay of Ponte Vedra, Florida, and her brother Phillip of East Hampton, NY, and her friend and life partner from high school days, Don Hattendorf of Elgin.

Visitation will be at Trinity Episcopal Church, 130 N. West St., Wheaton on Sunday July 28th from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. with the memorial service following at 3:00 p.m. Donations may be made to The American Cancer Society.
