J. Eddie Payton, age 78, long time resident of West Chicago, IL, passed away on Sunday, January 4, 2026. He was born on October 30, 1947 to Emmie Lee McLemore and Hobert Payton. Eddie and his 2 brothers were born in Memphis, TN and later raised in Chicago, IL. He graduated from Glenbard West High School in 1965, and soon after discovered what would become his lifelong calling in the grocery business. He took great pride in helping customers, greeting familiar faces, and welcoming new ones. Each day offered him the chance to connect and share a conversation. He married his high school sweetheart Caroline (née Kornfind) on July 27, 1968 and had 4 children and 15 grandchildren while together for 57 years of marriage.

Above all, Eddie cherished his family. He was a devoted husband, father, and grampy whose quiet strength and constant kindness shaped the lives of those he loved most. His greatest joy came from simply being surrounded by his family, and his gentle presence will be deeply missed.

He is survived by his wife Caroline, his four children Stephanie (Gregg) Lemkau, Christopher (Christina) Payton, Christina (Adam) Grunwaldt and Jennifer (Jesse) Fink and his grandchildren Foster, Max, Mia, Owen, Juliet, Aidan, Tredway, Cameron, Javin, Scarlett, Reese, Joelle, Liam and Jaceten.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Dean Payton and James Payton and his grandson Noah Grunwaldt.
