Douglas E.
Olsen
October 10, 1948 – June 16, 2017
A bright light went out on Friday, June 16, 2017,when Douglas E. Olsen, loving husband, father, friend, and cherished grandpa died after a decades-long battle with cancer. He was the third son born to_Harry and Edna (nee Winter) Olsen on Octoberbe10, 1948 in Oak Park, Il. He attended North Central College in Naperville where he met and married his great love, Patricia (nee Bruns). Son Christopher (Thea) and granddaughters Louisa, Morganna, and Violet completed his circle of love.
At North Central Doug was deeply involved in all aspects of theatre. For Doug, the drama—especially comedy!—never stopped. Every day he earned his Mr. Pun credentials, Magna Cum Laude. Following college he worked tirelessly as an elementary teacher in District 89, Glen Ellyn. The hundreds and hundreds of students who entered his classroom left knowing he cared about them and he used his humor (and puppets) to reach them and teach them. Doug's interest in antiques occupied his free time with trips to flea markets both local and around the Midwest. He was also an aficionado of Andy Griffith's Mayberry. ("Gooolleee!"), the history and preservation of one-room schoolhouses, and anything Muppets.
On his more serious, but none-the-less creative side, Doug was a dedicated worker at Trinity Episcopal Church in Wheaton where he held several lay positions.Though Doug would not have put it this way, a true ministry of his was to his many friends. He kept in touch with friends from his youth as well as those he met recently. Anyone who knew Doug was sure they could count on him for whatever they needed. He will be missed greatly and remembered fondly.
Doug is survived by his wife, son, daughter in law and three granddaughters. In addition he is survived by this brother David Olsen and family, nieces and nephews, several cousins, and Pat's extended family and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother John and sister Judy.
Services will be held Friday, July 7, 2017, at 2:00 at Trinity Episcopal Church at 130 N. West St., Wheaton, Il. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made to Trinity Episcopal Church .
