Douglas Lee Haas was born on February 24, 1944 and moved to his eternal home on August 25, 2026.

Doug was a “people person." Wherever he went he was a man full of sincere care, joy, curiosity, and engagement. He was always ready for a smile and a good conversation. He served others in various roles throughout his life as lawyer, deacon, usher, airport driver, and most significantly in his beloved roles as husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend. 

He was born in the city of Chicago in 1944 to Clarence and Marguerite Haas, who raised him to be independent and hard working. His sister, Barb Leung, tolerated and appreciated his humor and antics while growing up. At a young age, Doug used public transportation on the south side of Chicago for his first job delivering flowers. By the time he reached his senior year of high school, he co-owned the Craven Raven, a neighborhood coffee house. Along with this business drive at an early age, Doug's parents also instilled in him a love of baseball and music which continued throughout his life. Doug was a huge Cubs fan and enjoyed season passes through the years. He also played guitar and sang, using these talents in a band named, Ashes of Dawn. 

Doug's hard work and passion contributed to both his undergraduate and postgraduate work. He received a bachelor’s degree from Southern Illinois University and his law degree from Lewis University School of Law where he graduated cum laude while working full time and raising his young family with Sue. A short time later Doug opened his private practice and later joined a colleague to form the firm Haas and McLennan Law in Wheaton, Illinois. He loved using the law to serve others during their time of need. A much-loved gumball machine in his office relieved tension for clients walking through deep waters and also served his grandchildren when they came to visit.

Doug and his wife, Sue, were married on March 22, 1969 after an adventurous dating season. Sue enjoyed his charm, wit, and compassion for others. This gentle spirit marked every relationship he had. In the 80’s Doug began the most important relationship in his life with the Lord Jesus Christ. Everything he loved now had new meaning and more joy because of this decision. 

Doug and Sue enjoyed traveling together, concerts, vacations, and cruises, but by far his favorite past time was his involvement in the lives of his children: (Kyle Haas & Kristen Haas Conley [Keith]); grandchildren (Ethan Conley [Maddie], Shelby Sapp, Brooke Conley Willis [Camden], Ty Conley [Audrey], Jordan Sapp, Clancy Conley, Bryn Conley, Jacob Haas & Haven Conley; and great-grandchild (Quincy Conley) with Sue by his side. 

Doug and Sue started a new adventure of their own later in life in Door County where they made many memories at their cottage. This included bringing their family and friends to enjoy their “Refuge." Doug enjoyed waking early and bringing everyone coffee and donuts, reading his Bible and the newspaper on the screened in porch, grilling, beach time, and taking his grandkids on walks in the woods. Doug continued to be a passionate, fun, selfless, and intentional man to the end of his life. 

In step with who Doug was, he wanted others to be spared the suffering he endured with Alzheimer's. He donated his brain for research and his body to science in hopes of being a part of the ongoing work to find a cure. 

All are welcome to attend Doug’s celebration of life at Gospelife Church, 1N100 Gary Avenue, Carol Stream, IL 60188, with fellowship from 3:00 p.m. until the time of the memorial service at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 12th.
