Dorothy M. Orem's Obituary
Dorothy M. Orem, age 88, a resident of Wheaton formerly of Franklin Park, IL, passed into glory on Friday, July 19, 2013. She was born in Waukegan, IL on July 10, 1925.
Dorothy grew up in the Slovenian neighborhood of Chicago. She was very active in sports as a girl. She left school early to help support the family. She left the Chicago area to become a "Harvey Girl" in Santa Fe, NM where she met the love of her life, Raymond Orem. They were married in 1946 and managed a cafe called "The Little Chief" in Albuquerque, NM. They returned to the Chicago area in 1949 and settled in Franklin Park to raise their daughters. Ray and Dorothy took up square dancing with Belles and Beaus Square Dance Club to fill the empty nest years.
Dorothy was very active in the community, serving as a Girl Scout Leader, room mother, and was a member of the Women's Club in Franklin Park. Family was primary to her. She had a servant's heart and gave willingly of her time and love to those around her. Her faith was an important part of her life and she attended Bible Studies and church and was known as a prayer warrior.
Her four grandsons have fond memories of many special times with grandma. She was always an advocate for her daughters and her family. Many friends knew her as a counselor and confidante.
She is survived by her daughters, Janet (Arthur) Nelson of Germantown, WI and Kathleen Hayden of Wheaton, four grandsons, Michael (Heidi Scott), Stephen (Sue) and Bryan (Jacky Wolff) Nelson and Jeffrey (Angel) Hayden, one brother, Edward (Brigitte) Kocjancich of Harwood Heights and one sister, Dolores (John) Harzich of Mokena and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond in 1990, her parents Stephen and Amelia Kocjancich, brothers, Steve, Bill and Donald Kocjancich and twin daughters, Sheila Jean and Patricia Lee.
A visitation will be held on Monday, July 22, from 3 to 8 p.m. at Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St. in Wheaton. Further services and interment will be private.
