Obituary

Dorothy Ellis LaBar, age 96, a resident of Wheaton since 1951, died Monday, May 28 at The Methodist Home in Chicago. She was born on December 4, 1910 to Arthur and Elizabeth Ellis in Chicago.

Mrs. LaBar was a graduate of Oak Park-River Forest High School. She attended the University of Illinois and was a member of Sigma Alpha Iota sorority. In 1938 she married Daniel R. LaBar at the Euclid Ave. Methodist Church in Oak Park. She was a member of the the Gary Memorial United Methodist Church in Wheaton since 1952, where she sang in the choir for 50 years, served as choir librarian, and was a founding member of the Wesley Shoppe. She was also a member of the Du Page Homemakers and Green Gardeners, served as an election judge and conducted the annual Salvation Army drive in the Wheaton area for over 30 years. Dorothy received numerous awards for her community service and was named "Wheaton Woman of the Year." She was a craft artisan who was well known for her knitting and was instrumental in recruiting other knitters to provide lap robes for the residents of Du Page Convalescent Center.

Dorothy is survived by one daughter, Dr. Elizabeth (Wayne) Landerholm of Oak Park, one son, Dr. Daniel LaBar Jr. of Elmira, New York, and three grandchildren, Arthur S. Landerholm of Washington D.C., and Elizabeth Gardner of Columbus, OH and Jennifer (Jim) Bobzien of Endicott, NY.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 31, from 4 to 9 p.m. at the Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St., Wheaton.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, June 1 at 10:00 A.M., at Gary Memorial United Methodist Church, Main and Seminary Sts., Wheaton.

Interment will take place in Delavan, Wisconsin at the Spring Grove Cemetery.

Memorials may be directed to Gary Memorial United Methodist Church or the Salvation Army.
