Dorothy E. Killam, age 96, a longtime resident of Windsor Park in Carol Stream, went to be with the Lord peacefully on Monday, June 15, 2015. She was born August 19, 1918 in Bluffton, OH to Samuel S. and Ellen Bixel, the youngest of nine children.
Dorothy grew up in Ohio in a loving Mennonite family. Her mother died when she was seven so her father and older sisters helped raise her. At a youth gathering at her pastor's home she gave her heart and life to the Lord. She went off to business college and then to work for a savings and loan company. At age 22, in 1940, she moved to Chicago to work in the Secretarial Department at Moody Bible Institute. In 1947 she moved to Wheaton to work as an artist-photographer for Baptista Films, the first Christian film company. In 1949, she married Arthur Killam, a Baptist minister. Together they served churches in Joliet, IL and Baraboo, WI. After Arthur's death in 1958, she moved back to Wheaton with her her two young daughters, Joy and Joan. She first worked for an insurance agency and then in the Registrar's Office at Wheaton College for 23 years. Soon after retirement she moved to Windsor Park in Carol Stream.
She is survived by her two daughters, Joy (Hal) Van Der Molen of Whitefish, MT and Joan (Gary) Hill of Warrenville; her grandchildren, Erica (Tim) LaBonne, Nathan Winchell, Erin VanDerMolen, Sharon (Paul) Neville, and Elissa (Justin) Depuydt; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Arthur Killam.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, June 18, from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St. in Wheaton. A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 19th at 2:00 p.m. at
Windsor Park
, 124 Windsor Park Drive, Carol Stream, IL 60188. Private interment will take place in Findlay, OH at Maple Grove Cemetery.
