Doris V.
Johnson
March 14, 1926 – March 1, 2020
Doris Vivian Johnson, a resident of Covenant Living at Windsor Park in Carol Stream, IL, entered Heaven on Sunday, March 1, 2020.
She was born on March 14, 1926 in Evanston, IL, to Martin and Viola Granstrom. As a young girl, she enjoyed vacationing with her family in Eagle River, WI, and continued to visit the Northwoods throughout her life, making many happy memories.
Church and music were always an important part of Doris' life. She was raised in the Evanston Free Church, and she and her sisters (The Granstrom Trio) often sang at church. She played organ and piano, and served as church organist/pianist in multiple churches throughout her life. She has been a member at North Suburban Evangelical Free Church for more than 30 years.
Doris answered her country's call by enlisting in the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps during World War II, graduating from the Swedish Covenant Hospital School of Nursing in 1947.
In 1950 she married Rev. William E. Johnson, and in the following years they served in five churches across three states. She returned to work as a nurse in the late 1960s, and was the Director of Nursing at The Covenant Home of Chicago from 1977 to 1996, retiring at the age of 70.
Doris will be lovingly remembered by family and friends for her faithful trust in the Lord, her quiet, gentle nature, her sweet smile, and her devotion to family.
She is survived by her sons, Gregory (Jenni) Johnson of Spread Eagle, WI, Lorin (Polly) Johnson of Phelps, WI, and Theodore (Kathy) Johnson of Bowling Green, KY, and her daughter, Julie (Mark) Damrose of Streamwood, IL. She is also survived by 19 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Alice Newman, Aina Beckman, Elsy Burdett, brother Richard Granstrom, and her daughter Judith Shanks.
A visitation will be held Saturday, March 7, 2020, 3:30 p.m. at North Suburban Evangelical Free Church in Deerfield, IL with a funeral service following at 4:15 p.m.
Burial will take place in Eagle River, WI at a later date.
