Doris A. Colvin, age 91, a resident of Windsor Park Manor in Carol Stream, died Thursday, June 11, 2009, at Windsor's Johnson Health Care Center. She was born September 22, 1917, in Evanston, IL.
Doris grew up in Winnetka, IL, graduating from New Trier High School; she continued her studies at Wheaton College, Wheaton, IL, graduating in 1939. For most of her life she taught first grade, the greatest portion of her career being in Des Plaines, IL. Many of her former students kept in touch with her until her death, a testimony to the love she showered upon them.
A person of deep and devout faith, she was active in many aspects of life at Des Plaines Bible Church, teaching Sunday School and helping with church activities. In all things, she said, her greatest desire was "to bring glory to God." Even late into life she continued to be active in ministry, especially her work with Good News Jail and Prison Ministry. Later she was an active participant in life at Windsor Park Manor in Carol Stream, where she moved eighteen years ago and which she appreciated greatly. Doris loved reading, ping pong, and (especially) Scrabble.
She is survived by her two children, Daniel (Nancy) Colvin of Macomb, IL, and Nancy Block of McHenry, IL; four grandchildren: Christina Beth Colvin, Roxanne (Scott) Cramer, Courtney Morton, and Catlin Block; and four great-grandchildren: Max, Meika, Ryleigh, and Aiden.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Orville; and her brother, Robert Hallquist.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 1, 2009, at Windsor Park Manor in Carol Stream. Interment is private at Memorial Park Cemetery in Skokie, IL.
