Doreen Holder Smith, a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away on May 23 of 2023. Hailing from a small town in Tennessee, she met her husband Les, who was serving in the Air force, while living in Florida. They later married in his hometown in New Jersey. Doreen had a deep affection for plants and flowers, sharing her expertise by teaching flower arranging at the College of DuPage. She also dedicated herself to helping refugees learn English as a second language, finding fulfillment in their progress. Doreen's passion for reading led her to the Wheaton Public Library, where she cherished her time working and sharing her love of books. She was a devout Christian, always seeking to extend love and support to others. Additionally, Doreen had a special fondness for her birds, finding solace and joy in their company. Her memory will be treasured by her family and community, as she leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness, and service. May she rest in peace.

She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Leslie; her children Karen Travis, Lori Smith, Connie Sutton & Kevin Smith; her many grandchildren & great-grandchildren; and her sister Ruby Holder Nunley.

She was preceded in death by her sister Betty Holder Parks and her parents.

A visitation will be held Thursday, June 1, 2023, from 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St., Wheaton, IL, where a memorial service will be held on Friday, June 2, 2023, at 10:00 a.m.
