Donald E. Schumann, age 88, a resident of Glen Ellyn, died Saturday, January 11, 2014, in Wheaton. He was born February 22, 1925 in Barrington, IL.

Donald grew up in Forest Park, IL He joined the Army Air Corps right out of high school during World War II. His love of airplanes & flying became his career where he flew for Eastern Air Lines as a commercial air line pilot, for thirty years, retiring from flying in 1985. When he wasn't flying he was very active in many different Shriner organizations.

He is survived by his daughters, Cheryl (Ronald) Diener of Wheaton, and Cathy (Terry) Rutter of Elko-New Market, MN; daughter-in-law, Renee Schumann of Glendale, AZ; grandchildren, Amy Rutter, Kerri Rutter, Justin Diener, Barrett (Stacy) Diener, Michael (Mariann) Rutter, Joseph (Becky) Rutter, and Donald Schumann III; and great-grandchildren, Gabrielle Diener, Avery Diener, and Tristan Diener.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Irving and Frieda Schumann; brother, Raymond Schumann; sister, Edith Niederstadt; wife, Shirley Schumann; and son, Donald Schumann II.

A visitation will be held on Friday, January 17, 2014 from 9:30-10 a.m. at Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St., Wheaton, IL 60189 where a funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Mt. Emblem Cemetery in Elmhurst, IL.
