Donald Lloyd Moore of Glendale Heights, Illinois passed away on January 11, 2021 after a brief illness. Don was the father of 6 children – Mary, Jim, Michael, Ann, Dan and Rita. Michael passed in 1977. He was the grandfather of 12 and the great-grandfather of 11.
Don was born in the Austin district of Chicago on January 3, 1923 – Warren G. Harding was U.S. President. He grew up in Oak Park Illinois and graduated from Oak Park High School in 1940. Don was one of four siblings of Lloyd & Margret Moore. Don was the oldest son with Alice being the oldest, then Don, followed by Robert and Margret. Don was the last surviving sibling of this family.
Don served in the U.S. Navy (SeaBees) during World War II. When he returned to civilian life, he went to college using the newly approved G.I. Bill. He graduated from Northern Illinois Teacher College, now know as Northern Illinois University.
He began working at the Post Office in Oak Park after graduation. He met the sister of a co-worker. Her name was Catherine and they married in 1950. They remained married for 54 years with Catherine passing in 2004 at the age of 86.
Don is the author of several books including: Zipline River Park, From Inside the Bottle and Things Unseen. He was also the family sing-a-long leader as he strummed his guitar and sang all the classics.
Here's an interesting tidbit about Don: Since 1950, he has had only two addresses. His Bellwood, Illinois home (from 1950 to 1985) and his Glendale Heights home (from 1985 to 2021). That's 71 years!
Don was retired longer than he worked. He retired from the U.S. Post Office in 1978 and has lived 43 years while enjoying his benefit. He worked 30 years. A real outlier and that about sums up Donald Lloyd Moore.
