Donald Leroy
Herrington
December 24, 1930 – December 31, 2021
Donald went "Home" New Years' Eve one week after his 91st birthday. His death was not unexpected, but of course sudden. Don was born on Christmas Eve 1930 to Garnet and Allegra Herrington in the community of Honey Creek in Neola, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Duane, and his wife of 69 years, Marian. Leaving behind his brother Garnet (Marlene) Herrington of Ottumwa, IA, sister Marilyn (Billy) Parker of Colorado Springs CO, his children Mark (Peggy) Herrington of Indianapolis, IN, David (Bonnie) Herrington of Grand Rapids, MI, Ann (Tom) Culver Wheaton IL, and their children and grandchildren.
Don grew up on farms in southwest Iowa during which his true life began. He went forward at a Church of Christ revival meeting in Oakland, IA and his mother also soon after came to Christ. His early Christian education began with listening to Back to the Bible on the radio.
Don attended Roosevelt High School in Des Moines, IA working before and after school at the pharmacy in downtown Valley Junction. While attending Central Gospel Chapel Don began to lead Bible studies at Roosevelt with Youth for Christ ministries. After high school he attended Emmaus Bible School in Chicago where he met Marian Tenney. Don and Marian married the day after graduation: May 21, 1951. Don received a draft notice and obtained a three month deferment which turned into six months. Don served in the Korean conflict with the artillery. He was decorated with a purple heart medal in recognition of a shrapnel wound from a Chinese mortar.
Don returned home to his beloved Marian and an 18 month old son Mark (1952). David's (1954) birth followed. Don and Marian became involved with the ministries Child Evangelism Fellowship and Sunday School Union. By 1957 after many moves and jobs they moved to Des Moines where Ann (1957) was born. Don joined with Saydel school district superintendent John Montgormery on the work of starting the North Acres Gospel Chapel church.
The young family moved back to Nebraska in 1960 where they attended Highland Park Evangelical Free Church in Columbus where Don taught adult Bible classes, and American Sunday School Union work in Richland, NE. After moving back to Iowa in 1968 Don reentered the work of church leadership and disciple making at North Acres. By 1992 Don and Marian were continuing their ministry with another church in Shawnee Mission, KS. In 2000 Don and Marian began fellowshiping with the believers at Warrenville Bible Chapel in Warrenville, IL which was to be their last local church family.
Don's life clearly shows that his focus was not the temporal, but the eternal.
