David "Dubs" Norbeck, age 90, a resident of Covenant Village in Northbrook, Illinois, and formerly a longtime resident of Wheaton and Rockford, died peacefully September 20th at Brandel Health Facility. He was born March 28, 1925 in Rockford, Illinois to Eskil and Emily Norbeck.
Dave graduated from Wheaton College in 1947, where he received 13 varsity letters in 4 sports (football, basketball, baseball and track). At Wheaton he met Dorothy "Dottie" Randall and they were married in 1950. Dave then attended the University of Illinois where he received his medical doctorate in 1952. He did a residency in General Surgery at University of Illinois/Hines V.A. and finished in 1956. He later became a Diplomat of the American Board of Surgery and was inducted as a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons. He was the sole founder of Wheaton Medical Group, a founding physician of Central DuPage Hospital, and Chief of Surgery in 1971. While in the Wheaton area he attended Glen Ellyn Covenant Church where he taught Sunday School and was a deacon. He was Chairman of the PTO and on the Board of Directors at Wheaton Christian Grammar School and Wheaton Academy. He also served on the Board of Directors for Wheaton College Alumni Association and was a member of the Christian Medical Society.
In 1972 he moved with his family to Rockford, Illinois where he became a partner in Lundholm Surgical Group and was Clinical Associate Professor of Surgery for the University of Illinois Rockford Campus. He was on staff at Swedish American Hospital and St. Anthony's Hospital, and served on the Board of Directors of Winnebago County Medical Society. While in Rockford he and his family attended First Covenant Church and First Evangelical Free Church where he served as Chairman of the Missions Committee for 8 years. He also served on the Board of Directors for the Rockford United Way. In 1983 he was inducted into the Wheaton College Crusader Sports Hall of Fame.
He is survived by seven children, Nancy (Tim) Anderson of Skokie, Kathy (David) Tooley of Libertyville, Dr. David (Antoinette) Norbeck Jr. of Barrington, Susan (Jerry) Shelton of Wheaton, Karin (Doug) Smith of Dallas, Randall (Kim) Norbeck of Winfield, and Kristin (Jeff) Wright of Highlands Ranch, CO, 16 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, and one brother, Eskil (Mary) Norbeck of Manistee, MI.
He was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy Randall Norbeck, his parents Eskil and Emily Norbeck, a brother Norris and a sister Clara.
A visitation will be held on Thursday September 24th from 4-8 pm at the Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St. in Wheaton. Private interment will be held at the Scandinavian Cemetery in Rockford.
