David D. McCarrell, age 82, a resident of Wheaton and Winfield, since 2003, went to be with the Lord on Monday, October 21, 2013. He was born July 12, 1931 in Cicero to Dr. William and Minnie McCarrell. His father William "Billy" McCarrell founded Cicero Bible Church and served along with Minnie for 45 years.
David grew up in Oak Park and attended Wheaton Academy. He joined the Coast Guard during the Korean War and went on to graduate from Wheaton College in 1957. On August 20, 1955 he married his high school sweetheart, Judy Gedde.
Mr. McCarrell taught and coached football at North Park Academy (1957 to 1961) and Niles Township High Schools (1961 to 1995). After retirement from teaching he served as President of Pacific Garden Mission for the last 17 years.
Dave had a deep love for the Pacific Garden Mission with a passion for helping the homeless and changing lives through sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ. He also expressed his love for people through coaching and teaching. Although he loved football, his favorite sporting event was anything that involved his grandchildren. Above all, his faith in Christ defined his life. His life verse was Proverbs 3:5-6 "Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths."
He is survived by his wife, Judith McCarrell, his children, Caryn (Tom) Thornton of Carol Stream, David (Joann) McCarrell of Carol Stream, Cathryn (David) Kucera of Hutchinson, MN, and Christine (Marc) Horner of Wheaton, 13 grandchildren, Megan, Trent, Kaylee, Katelyn, Hannah, Mason, Kelly, Jacob, Haley, Garrett, Alexa, Grant, and Addison, and three siblings, James (Nicki) McCarrell, Ruth Gray, and Daniel (Jo Anne) McCarrell.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his aunt, Marie Mense and 5 siblings, Myrtle Stukes, William, Gordon, Paul and Grace Rexilius.
A visitation will be held on Friday, October 25, from 4 to 8 at College Church, 332 E. Seminary Ave, Wheaton, IL 60187, where a funeral service will be held on Saturday at 10 am. Interment will follow at Clarendon Hill Cemetery in Darien.
