Clarence Feierabend , 88 a resident of Windsor Park Manor in Carol Stream and formerly of Wheaton, died Wednesday, October 10, 2007. He was born in Grey Eagle, Minnesota and raised on the family farm. Earning money for college by cutting and selling firewood he and his brother Harvey set out for St. Cloud Teachers College where he met Evelyn Parker, of Long Prairie, Minnesota.
After the attack on Pearl Harbor he attempted to join the Army but was advised that his eyesight was unacceptable and rejected. Two months later the Army determined that his eyesight had improved dramatically and was drafted. He went on to serve in the Army as a 1st Lt. and in the Air Force as a NCO including deployments to Italy in World War II and the Korean conflict. After which time he was selected for training in the first class of the Nuclear Power Operator's School. This small cadre being chosen from all five of the armed forces. Along with his classmates, he participated in the construction of the nuclear reactor to supply electrical power for the research station known as Camp Century, Greenland located 300 miles from the North Pole under the ice cap. The construction of "The City Under Ice" was documented by Walter Cronkite and The National Geographic Magazine In 1961. After returning to Fort Belvoir, VA, he completed his Bachelor of Science degree at George Washington University, Summa Cum Laud under the military's "Get an A - we'll pay" program and retired from the Air Force in 1966 after 24 years. He worked for an engineering company in New Jersey for two years and then accepted an offer to become a nuclear power plant inspector for the Nuclear Regulatory Agency. Much of his work lead to the institution of safeguards for the use of nuclear power as an energy source.
Evelyn and Clarence married in the chapel at Fort Leonard Wood, MO November 8, 1942 and would have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this year. Together they provided a secure and loving home for their daughters, Nancy and Sarah, and 23 foster babies.
Clarence demonstrated his faith and love through his kindness and genuine interest in helping others in many small and practical ways. His wry sense of humor and ability to dominate at cribbage remained to the end of his good life.
He was preceded in death by his father, Julius O. Feierabend, his mother Esther Rodean Feierabend, brothers, Morris, Norman, Harvey and Rodney Feierabend, and cherished daughter, Nancy Smith.
He is survived by his loving wife Evelyn Parker Feierabend, and daughter Sarah Halbfoster of Warrenville, IL. Grandsons, Ken (Damian) Draper of Glen Allen, VA; Noah Halbfoster and Brodie Halbfoster of Altamonte Springs, FL. Great-Grandchildren, Madison Draper and Dalton Draper of Glen Allen, VA. A sister, Dorothy Webber of Puyallup, WA and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial will be held, Saturday, October 20, 2007 at 2:00pm at Windsor Park Manor, 130 Windsor Park Drive, Carol Stream, IL 60188.
