Christopher Erwin Nickerson's Obituary
Christopher Erwin Nickerson, age 60, formerly of Wheaton, IL, passed away on Monday, February 16, 2015 at his home in Waverly, Iowa.
Chris was born on March 5, 1954 in Geneva, IL. He grew up on Cherry Street in Wheaton and attended Wheaton schools. Chris earned an Associate's degree, Summa Cum Laude, from the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, IL. Chris continued his studies at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, IL. There he earned a Bachelor's degree in Workforce Education, Summa Cum Laude, and a Master's degree in Education, also Summa Cum Laude.
After completing his degrees, he worked as an Associate Professor at Pennsylvania College of Technology, in Williamsport, PA. After retiring from teaching Chris moved to Greene, IA and then to Waverly, IA.
Chris had a love for animals, especially cats. He often took in strays and cared for them, nursing many back to health. Chris was an adventurous traveler all his life. He saw most of the country. All Chris needed was his knapsack and, in his earlier years, his thumb. In his travels he visited many of the national parks, his favorite being Mount Rainier in Washington State.
Chris loved riding his motorcycle and rode throughout most of his life. He was extremely handy and had a perfectionist quality to doing projects. If it was broken, Chris would find a way to fix it in the least costly way possible. Scrabble was the family game he enjoyed the most.
Chris is survived by his siblings Ralph "Nick" (Sandy) Nickerson of West Dundee, IL, Jill (Alan) MacDonald of Palm City, FL, Kim (Lynn) Nickerson of Delray Beach, FL, Mary Shipley of Greene, IA, and four nephews and one niece.
Chris was preceded in death by both his parents, Ralph Nickerson and Elizabeth Wells Nickerson, and his nephew, Justin David Shipley.
A visitation will be held on Monday, February 23, 2015 from 4-8 p.m. at Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St, in Wheaton, IL. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, February 24, 2015 at 10:30 A.M. at Trinity Episcopal Church , 130 N. West Street, in Wheaton, IL. Interment will follow at Wheaton Cemetery.
Memorial gifts may be directed to a Humane Society or an animal shelter of the contributor's choosing in their own community.
