Obituary

Chester F. Sudds, Jr., age 82, of Wheaton, died Sunday, April 29, 2007 at the Illinois Masonic Medical Center in Chicago. He was born on October 6, 1924 in Homewood, Illinois.

Chet graduated with Honors from Thornton Township High School in 1942. He enlisted in the Army in December of 1942. He was accepted into the A-12 College program and was sent to New York University, Washington Square College in Greenwich Village. After two semesters the program was disbanded and he was assigned to the 104th Infantry Division (Timberwolves). He fought in the European Theatre for two years before he was seriously wounded during combat. Chet was awarded a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star for Meritorious Service. After World War II, Chet attended Purdue University on a GI Bill and graduated with a degree in Chemical Engineering.

He married Phyllis Johnson on May 10, 1952 and that same year he joined Belden Corporation and spent 30 years in the wire and cable industry. He was a Product Development Manager for the Electrical Division and received two patents for insulated electrical wire. He was a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers. Chet represented his company for the National Electrical Manufacturers Association. Through NEMA, he gave many presentations at various Electrical Insulation Conferences.

Chet was a longtime member of Gary Memorial United Methodist Church in Wheaton and served as an Usher and also taught Sunday School. He volunteered with the PTA, the Jaycees, and the Wheaton Community Association. He enjoyed golfing, gardening and was an avid reader.

He is survived by his two sons, Alan (Barbara) Sudds of Glen Ellyn and Andrew (Kristin Conley) Sudds of Chicago; his son-in-law, Richard Evers; and two grandsons, Mark and Erik Sudds.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Phyllis; his two daughters, Karen Evers, and Susan Sudds.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, May 2, from 3 until 9 P.M. at the Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main Street, in Wheaton. A memorial service will be held on Thursday at 10:00 A.M. at Gary Memorial United Methodist Church, 224 N. Main Street, Wheaton, IL 60187.
