Obituary

Charles W. Lewis, age 90, a  resident of Windsor Park in Carol Stream, IL, went to be with the Lord peacefully on Saturday, February 3, 2024.  He was born on March 1, 1933, in Keokuk, Iowa to Walter and Maud Lewis.

Chuck was the valedictorian of the 1951 class of Peoria Manual High School. He graduated from Bradley University with a BA in 1955 and an MA in 1964.

Following graduation, he taught mathematics at Peoria Central High School for one year when he was drafted into the army and served as a mathematician mostly in Japan.

Chuck loved Asia so much that he arranged to stay there after his army assignment. He had a fantastic job as a math teacher at the American School in Japan. He could see his interests shifting more from math to people. He continued this saga by traveling through more than 60 countries of Asia and Europe for a year and a half on a life-changing motorcycle trip.

It was on this trip that he met his future wife, a Canadian named Sue, at a campground in Copenhagen. World travel has been a common bond ever since.

The 1960's were filled with teaching at Limestone High School near Peoria, research work at Bradley University with the Gifted Children's Program and earning a Ph.D. in counseling psychology at the University of Wisconsin.

The "seventies" consisted of teaching at Bradley (Counselor Education) and traveling to Asia in the summers to help missionaries and expatriates with personal issues and concerns. He received the Putnam Award for excellence in teaching in 1975.

When a position as Director of Counseling at Wheaton College became available in 1980, Chuck seized it enthusiastically. From 1980 to 1995, it provided more direct counseling opportunities, more interactions with TCKs (students who had grown up overseas) and more opportunities for overseas involvement as a counselor.

Chuck and Sue affiliated with Barnabas International in 1995, when he retired from Wheaton College. During their "retirement" they continued to serve a wide variety of mission agencies and NGOs (Non Governmental Organizations) in more than 20 countries on five continents.

Chuck and Sue have two children, Linda (and Mark) Sweeting of Wheaton and Daniel (and Rebecca) Lewis of Vancouver Island, BC, Canada. He is survived by six grandchildren (Ashley, Emmie, Noah, Galena, Adielle, and River), his sister, Kathy Barkley of Morton, IL, and his dear friend, Donna Peltz.

Chuck was a resident of Windsor Park Manor Estates in Carol Stream, and has been an active member of the Wheaton Evangelical Free Church since 1980.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 10 at 11:00 a.m. at The Compass Church, 520 E. Roosevelt Rd., Wheaton, IL. Friends may visit with the family from 9:30 a.m. until 11:00 a.m.
