IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Charles E.
Henry
November 9, 1938 – June 29, 2025
Charles "Chuck" Henry, a resident of Windsor Park in Carol Stream, went to be with the Lord, dying peacefully in his home on June 29, 2025. He will be greatly missed by those whose lives he touched as a professor, mentor, friend, father, grandfather, and husband.
Chuck was born November 9, 1938, in Waterloo, Iowa to Orlin E. and Mabel M. (née Coombs) Henry. In 1960, he graduated summa cum laude from Grace College in Winona Lake, Indiana. Chuck then attended Grace Theological Seminary and obtained his doctorate in psychology from Purdue University in 1969. He taught at Grace College until 1971 and then joined the faculty of Wheaton College as chairman of the psychology department. Chuck taught there until 1983, when he entered the business world and worked as head of human resources for several companies, including Illinois Bone & Joint Institute, from which he retired in 2012.
As a professor, Chuck was a passionate teacher and mentor. His Introduction to Psychology class was one of the most popular electives at Wheaton College, and he grew the psychology department into the most common major on campus. Chuck frequently toured the country visiting his students participating in internships, and for several years led the International Study Program—a summer study abroad program based in the Netherlands.
While a senior at Grace College, Chuck noticed two cute incoming freshmen arriving from Mansfield, Ohio and suggested to his best friend that they ask the two coeds out—saying "You take the blonde, I'll take the brunette." That next spring, Chuck married Jean Enlow (with his friend marrying the blonde soon thereafter), and last month they celebrated their sixty-fifth wedding anniversary.
Chuck and Jean loved to travel—both domestically and to Europe. In 2010, they took their children and grandchildren on a trip to Switzerland, Austria, and Germany, in part to see the Oberammergau Passion Play—reprising a trip they had taken in 1990 for their thirtieth anniversary. Later, they promised each of their four grandchildren a trip of their choice to celebrate graduating from high school—resulting in trips to Italy, Japan, Scandinavia, and a Danube riverboat cruise.
Chuck was an avid racquetball player and sports fan, and attended every home sporting event of his two sons. He also enjoyed home construction projects, a skill he picked up from his father who worked as a wood patternmaker.
In addition to his wife, Jean, Chuck is survived by his sons, Erik (Marilee) and Jason (Margaret); his grandchildren, Rachel, Ethan, Brian, and Julie; and his brother, Ron (Willa). He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Ruth; and his daughter-in-law Sandy.
A Memorial Service to honor Chuck will be held on Saturday, July 19 at 11:00 a.m. at College Church, 332 E. Seminary Avenue, Wheaton, IL. The service will be led by Pastor Knute Larson, his best friend…who's married to the blonde. The service will be livestreamed through this link: Memorial Service for Dr. Chuck Henry .
In lieu of flowers, if you'd like to make a donation in his memory, the family suggests either Grace College or the Alzheimer's Association.
