Charles E. Gerber, age 98, a resident of Windsor Park in Carol Stream, IL, died Wednesday, May 29, 2013, at Windsor's Johnson Health Care Center. He was born on April 14, 1915 on the family farm near Carlock, Illinois. He was a resident of Wheaton from 1950 to 2006 and then resided at Windsor Park in Carol Stream until his death.
He graduated from high school in Carlock in 1933 and from the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1938. After graduation he moved to Chicago, IL where he met his future wife Lorraine. They were married 65 years before Lorraine passed away in 2006.
Charles was a commercial artist and art director in the Chicago area for advertising and printing companies designing brochures, catalogues and company logos. He also used his artistic skills in serving his Lord through his work with numerous churches and charitable organizations.
As a long time member of the Wheaton Bible Church, he served on the Board of Elders, taught Sunday school, served as an usher, and was a volunteer on numerous committees.
He is survived by his four children, C. Allen (Merry) Gerber of Okatie, SC, Donald (Ann) Gerber of Wheaton, Patricia (Ronald) Beran of Wheaton, and Gary (Peggy) Gerber of Canton, MS; and many nieces, nephews, grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife (Lorraine); and his four siblings, Loda Ratcliff, Helen Burgess, Joseph Gerber and V. Ruth Kurns.
A memorial visitation will be held on Monday, June 3, 2013 from 4-8 p.m. at Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main Street in Wheaton, IL. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, June 4, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at Windsor Park, 124 Windsor Park Drive in Carol Stream, IL.
