Charles E. Berger, age 91, a resident of Wheaton, since 1971, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, September 23, 2016. He was born December 22, 1924 in East Orange, New Jersey to Fritz and Clara Berger.
Chuck grew up in Newark and after high school enlisted in the Army Air Corps during WWII. He served in the Aleutian Islands as a radar technician at the rank of Staff Sergeant in the 404th Bombardment Squadron.
He met Aurora Acanfora after the war and they were married on October 29, 1950. He worked for 40 years at CGR / GE as an x-ray service manager. He retired in 1986.
He was a very active member of the B.R. Ryall YMCA since 1971. He ran the Chicago marathon in 1986. He was a founding member of St. Daniel the Prophet Catholic Church in Wheaton, IL. He enjoyed travel, camping with his family, skiing, gardening and outdoor activities.
He is survived by his wife, Aurora, 5 children, Wayne (Virginia) Berger of Oakland Twp., MI, Dawn (Bill) Seitz of Woodridge, Glenn (Deena) Berger of Mill Valley, CA, Gary (Susan) Berger of McKinney, TX and Gayle (Aaron) Watson of Apex, NC, 12 grandchildren, Audrey (Andrew) Fahrney, Todd Berger, Crystal Seitz, Tiffany (Brian) McAnally, William Seitz, Stephen Seitz, Alexandra Grady, Colton Berger, Jared Berger, Sarah Berger, Matthew Watson and Alek Watson.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Frederick.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, October 2, from 2 to 6 p.m. at Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St., Wheaton. A funeral mass will be held on Monday, October 3, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Daniel the Prophet Church, Wheaton, IL. Interment will follow at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, Illinois.
