Caryl Ross, 97, born on November 6, 1913 at Bradgate, IA, she died December 29, 2010 at her Windsor Park Manor home in Carol Stream, IL.
Caryl attended National College of Education and received her Master's from Northwestern in 1941. She taught elementary school at Chicago's Hull House, in Lake Forest, IL and South Haven, MI. She met and married Norman Ross after he had a fortuitous flat tire near her school. She and Norm lived in both Oak Lawn, and Hinsdale, IL for many years before retiring to Lake DeSoto, in Hot Springs Village, AK.
"Nan" was an avid reader and gardener who had a passion for adventure travel, exploration, and her family farm heritage. She rode in biplanes at 16 and combines at 92. She traveled with her husband to Russia, China, Egypt, Mexico and South America. They helped to build two churches, Pilgrim Congregational and Village United Methodist. They also helped build Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn, were very involved in Infant Welfare, and served on Hot Springs Village Boards. Caryl took a keen and helpful interest in others, always gracious with a good word for everyone. She was a loving and dedicated grandmother and caretaker of her extended family.
She is survived by her daughter, Kay Strayer and son-in-law, Jay, of Glen Ellyn; her grandsons, Benjamin Bitner and Jason (Danielle) Bitner of Chicago; a great-grand daughter, Hollis; a niece, Caryl Ann Halverson of Spokane; and several nephews.
Preceded in death by her husband, Norman E. Ross; and son, Richard Ross; sisters, Mildred Jennings and Ruth Weed.
Interment will be at Mineral Ridge Cemetery, near Boone, Iowa.
