Obituary

Carol was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey, on March 20, 1930. She was the only child of William T. Scheid and Mary L. (Thiel) Scheid. She moved to Brooklyn, New York, as a child, where her father worked as an electrician. As a teenager, the family moved to Trenton, New Jersey, where she would graduate in 1948 from Hamilton High School with Honors, having achieved an honors' certificate for four consecutive years. She then attended Germantown School of Nursing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where she received her RN certification in 1951.

Soon after she attended Moody Bible Institute in Chicago, Illinois, where she met her future husband, Richard A. "Dick" Schuler. They were married on September 3rd, 1955. Together they pursued an interest in Christian Foreign Missions. Upon graduating from Moody, Carol worked as a nurse in Ypsilanti, Michigan, while Dick attended Eastern Michigan University and graduated with a Bachelor's degree in education in 1959.

In 1962 they joined Greater Europe Mission and in 1964, with four young children (Rick, Janet, Keith and David) they moved to France where they would serve for 35 years. The family lived in Paris, France, for two years while they attended language school at La Sorbonne. In 1966, they joined a team involved in church planting in northern France, where their youngest child, Susan, was born. As a pastor's wife, she served many people with gracious hospitality.

In 1980, at the age of 50, she underwent brain tumor surgery that would leave her with partial facial paralysis, left ear deafness, gradual loss of sight in her left eye and a balance impairment. This surgery had a major impact and she would continue to courageously live with the ramifications of the surgery for the rest of her life.

In 1983, she renewed her RN certification at Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield, Illinois. Then in 1984, they moved back to France, this time to the suburbs of Paris where they joined another ministerial team. In 1988, as empty nesters, they joined the team at Camp of the Peaks in the French Alps where they served until 1994 when they moved to Hyeres in Mediterranean southern France. Here they returned to church planting until they retired from Greater Europe Mission, moving back to Trenton, New Jersey, in 1999 to care for her elderly mother.

Dick served as interim pastor at her childhood home church, Shadyrest Bible Church in Chesterfield, New Jersey, where she renewed many old friendships. Then, after spending a few years in Chesapeake, Virginia, they moved to Winfield, Illinois, to be near family. Here they joined Community Fellowship Church from where she received community, strength and joy. After the death of her husband in December of 2007, she remained in her Winfield home until March 2009. She would then live her final four years in her son's home in Bartlett.

She will be remembered for her devotion to service, her hospitality and her perseverance especially in the face of adversity.

Carol is survived by her children, Rick Schuler, Janet (Venkat) Tangirala, Keith (Laura) Schuler, David (Ann) Schuler, Susan (Thierry) Labbe; her grandchildren, Ian and Aubin Schuler, Melody and Donovan Shickley, Anjali Tangirala, Kaylynn and Victoria Schuler, Nikeata and Trever Schuler, as well as David, Marie, Priscille, Jessica and Talia Labbe; her sisters-in-law Marilyn (Larry) Riley and Yvonne Baker; her brother-in-law Clinton Harroun.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Schuler; her infant daughter, Judith Mary Schuler; her parents, William T. Scheid and Mary L. (Thiel) Scheid.

A visitation and funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 6, 2013, beginning at 10:00 am at Community Fellowship Church, 28W240 North Ave., in West Chicago, Illinois. Interment will follow at Bartlett Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be directed to the General Fund at Greater Europe Mission, 18950 Base Camp Road, Monument, CO 80132-8009.
