Captain Quang Dinh Nguyen, age 90, a resident of Bloomingdale, IL, died Monday, April 30, 2018, at Alden Valley Ridge in Bloomingdale, IL. He was born August 9, 1927 in Hai Phong, Vietnam.

Quang graduated from the French-Vietnamese Merchant Marine College. Quang was an international sea Captain in the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans shipping important cargo like rice and oil to many countries in Asia, Europe and America. Besides Vietnamese, he spoke fluently in French and English. He trained and mentored hundreds of young Merchant Marines during his 20 years as Captain. His last trip as a Captain of the "Dai Duong" ship was to move over 3000 Vietnamese refugees from Subic Bay, Philippines to Guam after the fall of Saigon on April 30, 1975 - exactly 43 years ago. On that ship, he also transported Pastor Truong Van Sang and Pastor Phan Minh Tan and their families. Both of these pastors eventually became Superintendents (Giao Hat Truong) of the Vietnamese District Alliance Churches in the USA. A third pastor and the families of Pastor Van Dai were also on the ship, and he is currently the founder of Midway City Vietnamese Alliance Church in California (one of the two largest Vietnamese churches in the US).

He married Ms. Sa T. Luu on July 15, 1953 and they had one daughter named Paulette Phung Phi (Thomas) Nguyen. He then married Ms. Bon T. Nguyen and they had five children, Do Tu (Lisa) Nguyen, Loann Phi (Chuong) Dam, Lang Phu (Vinh) Nguyen, Xuong Tho (Missy) Nguyen and Kayla Yen Phi Li. Quang loved his 16 grandchildren, Peter (Lindsey), Taylor, Kylie, Kirsten, Jadin, Ethan, Elliott, Alex, Austin, Allie, Max, Talia, Spencer, Lorna, Kamryn and Lyla. He is also survived by his sister, Binh.

He was preceded in death by his sisters Xuong and Thanh Hien and brother Phan.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, May 5, 2018 from 2:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St., in Wheaton, IL, where a funeral service will be held on Sunday at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow the services at Trisons Crematory, 919 N. Garfield Avenue, in Lombard, IL.
