Bruce Harrison, age 88, of Wheaton, died Sunday, December 21, 2014, at Sunrise Fountain Square in Lombard. He was born in Toronto, Canada on June 10, 1926, to Gordon and Elsie Harrison.
He grew up in Toronto where he met Mary Eleanor Banford as teenagers. They were married on August 11, 1945. Bruce worked for the Toronto Transit Commission as Superintendent of Garages. In 1971, he moved to the U.S. and worked as an executive in the transportation industry. He worked for Willett Companies from 1974 until retiring as President of School Bus and Truck Leasing operations in 1990. Bruce was known as an expert in his field and traveled as a speaker to the transportation industry. He held the office of president of the ATSA, Automotive Transportation Supervisors Association. He was a member of SAE, the Society of Automotive Engineering.
Bruce was a man with honesty, integrity, respect, and tremendous energy and strength to reach the goals he set for himself in his lifetime. He had a quiet faith in God which he held within himself. He served at the Anglican Church of England in Canada in his youth. Married, then raised his children in St. Andrews United/Presbyterian Church in Canada and in recent years has attended the First Presbyterian Church of Wheaton.
Bruce loved to travel, to see new places and approach new challenges head on as he did in Toronto, Boston, Rochester N.Y. and Chicago, passing on his knowledge and lifetime of experience in transportation vehicle maintenance to the young men he hired and brought up through the ranks. He earned their respect and to some he was a mentor.
In his early years he was an avid swimmer and enjoyed the hobbies of photography and winemaking. At his retirement in 1990, besides traveling extensively, he took on new hobbies, attaining his usual perfection in Lapidary, stained glass and maintaining his 76 GMC motor home which was lovingly named "Lazy Daisy" in which Eleanor and he toured the lower 48 states.
His love for his wife, Eleanor and their children, Lee, Bruce and Rob was profound and everlasting, at the same time expecting the best from each of them. In time, the same applied to his grandchildren, Michelle, Robert, Richard, Anthony and Angela, and great-grandchildren, Gwendolyn, Anthony, Addison and Abryanna.
At quiet moments in our later years, Bruce has said "we've done it all Eleanor, no regrets". Indeed, he did it all.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
