A memorial service for Mrs. Betty Wyngarden, longtime resident of Wheaton and Carol Stream, will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, August 6 at Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main Street in Wheaton. Visitation will be at 9:30 a.m. at Hultgren just prior to the service. A private burial will follow for family only.
Mrs. Wyngarden died Saturday, August 2,2008, at Windsor Park Manor where she'd enjoyed living since 1987. Born September 13,1911, in San Antonio, Texas, to J. C. O'Hair and Ethel Anderson O'Hair, she was the fifth of six children. Her father was a residential builder who later served for some thirty-five years as pastor of North Shore Church in Chicago. Pastor O'Hair also taught the Bible for many years on Chicago radio stations.
In 1934 Betty graduated from Wheaton College with a degree in English. There she met upper c1assman Clarence B. Wyngarden whom she married on March 21,1936. In 1939 he commenced his fifty-year medical practice in Wheaton, serving Delnor Hospital in St. Charles and Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield. After doctoring in the Army, he added to his practice the role of Wheaton College's school physician for thirty-seven years. During all that time of his being on the job or on call 24/7, Betty faithfully kept the home
fires burning.
After college graduation she worked at the Furniture Mart in downtown Chicago. Then after raising their three children, she helped in Clarence's office until he retired. Her hobbies included reading, knitting, antiquing, seeing God's beauty in creation, hosting family holiday celebrations, and her dogs, having one or two virtually all of her life. She cared deeply for her beloved family and for the missionary and homeless ministries of College Church of Wheaton where she and Clarence were lifelong members.
Betty was preceded in joining her Lord by her husband of sixty-three years on November 18,1999. Surviving are her children: Judith Wyngarden Pollard (husband C. William Pollard) of Wheaton; Elizabeth Wyngarden Toles (husband George Toles) of Edmonds, Washington; and John Wyngarden (wife Danette) of West Chicago, Illinois; sister Lucille O'Hair Montgomery of Windsor Park Manor in Carol Stream, Illinois; nine grandchildren (and their spouses) and 19 great-grandchildren.
