Betty C. Powell, 77, a resident of Carol Stream, Illinois, died on Wednesday, August 8 at Central Dupage Hospital in Winfield, Illinois.
She was born on April 2, 1935 in Macon, Georgia and attended both elementary and high school there. Mrs. Powell graduated second in her high school class and attended Tuskegee University in Tuskegee, Alabama. Mrs. Powell earned her Bachelor's Degree in Social Work from Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas in 1973.
Mrs. Powell worked for Family Service and Guidance Center in Topeka, Kansas for about 20 years until her retirement in 1998. Prior to that Mrs. Powell worked at Topeka State Hospital as a Psychiatric Technician. Over the years she also worked in various part-time jobs in the retail industry to supplement her income.
Mrs. Powell was an avid reader with a particular love for mystery books. She enjoyed popular music over the years but had a special appreciation for the old Rhythm and Blues masters. Mrs. Powell loved to travel and spent time in Europe, Africa, the Caribbean and all across the United States. She enjoyed fine dining but was always happy to have a piece of southern fried catfish or a tender, grilled steak. Mrs. Powell had an infectious smile and always a kind word for everyone.
Mrs. Powell was very strong spiritually. The roots of her journey began in the Southern Baptist church as a child and she continued to practice Christianity until she left us to be with the Lord for eternity. Mrs. Powell's natural sense of service to society is evidence of the deep spiritual foundation she lived by.
Mrs. Powell is survived by her sons, Gregory L. Powell and Mikael A. Powell, grandchildren, Gregory M. Powell, Daniel H. Powell and Erin S. Powell and daughter-in-law Kelly L. Powell.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Verna L. Clowers and father James E. Capers.
