Bernice L. Johnson, age 90, a resident of Wheaton, and formerly a longtime resident of Villa Park, went to be with the Lord on Monday, December 14, 2015, at DuPage Convalescent Center. She was born August 12, 1925 in Ellsworth, Wisconsin to Axel and Grace Hanson.
Bernice attended Trinity College in Minneapolis, MN earning a degree in Christian Education and received training in nursing. On September 1, 1950, she married Dwight Edward Johnson in Lund, Wisconsin. They lived in Red Wing, MN, where they had three children, until his work took them to Trussville, Alabama. In 1973, they moved to Villa Park. She worked at Fairview Baptist Home in Downers Grove.
They were members of Gideon's International, where she remained active after Dwight passed away in 1990. Her faith was an important part of her life and she was very active at Hillside Baptist Church, where she served in the nursery and in many other ministries.
She is survived by her three children, Sylvia (William) Odom Wood of Pinson, AL, Steven Johnson of Birmingham, AL and Ruth Ann (Dave) Sobotka of Warrenville, six grandchildren, Katie, Kari, Andrew, Kelly, Benjamin and Alyssa and five great-grandchildren, Eli, Drew, Alex, Blake and Sylvie. She is also survived by a brother, Reuben (Marjorie) Hanson.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dwight, her parents, and four siblings, Leila May Edblom, Leland Hanson, Boyd Hanson and Ruby M. Hanson.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, December 20, 2015 from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. at Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St., Wheaton, IL, where a funeral service will follow at 4:00 p.m. Interment will be held on Monday, December 21, at 10:00 a.m. at Mt. Emblem Cemetery in Elmhurst, Illinois.
