Bernard E. Therrien, age 92, a resident of Bartlett, passed away on Wednesday, June 22, 2016, at St Alexius Hospital in Hoffman Estates, Illinois. He was born August 25, 1923 in North Adams, MA to Zephire and Annie Mousseau Therrien, the youngest of eight children.
He grew up in the Berkshires of western Massachusetts, enjoying baseball, golf, skiing, and basketball. He attended Catholic elementary school, speaking English in the morning and French in the afternoon. Bernard earned a scholarship to attend a Catholic boarding school. After graduating and turning 18, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He served as a Pharmacist Mate from 1942 to 1946. After an honorable discharge he graduated from Lowell University with a Bachelor's of Science degree in Textile Chemistry.
Bernard is survived by his wife of 58 years, Phyllis (nee Charron), who he met in elementary school, dated as teenagers in the late 1930's and met again in the summer of 1957 at a wedding. After a whirlwind courtship, they married on May 3, 1958. Other survivors are his children, Marcia (Scott) Ryles, Lois (Steven) Padovani, and Scott (Claudia) Therrien, and five grandchildren, Emily, Edward, Allison, Ryan and Derek.
He was preceded in death by one grandson, Alexander Ryles, his parents and siblings.
After a dozen job related moves, Bernard retired after a 40-year career in Sales and Industrial Safety.
A memorial mass will be held on Monday, June 27, 2016 at 10:00 A.M. at St. Joseph, Downers Grove. Military honors and interment will be held at a later date at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery.
