IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Barbara
Jackel
February 26, 1938 – September 7, 2022
Barbara "Bobbie" Jackel, born in February 1938, in Virginia, passed away Wednesday, September 7, 2022. She was 84 years old. Bobbie had delicate health for some time, although she had beaten previous acute episodes of affliction the past couple of years.
Bobbie was born to Virgil and Ruby, and was the older of two daughters. Her parents made frequent moves throughout Bobbie's childhood between states in the Midwest and the southeastern U.S., finally settling in southern California, where Bobbie attended upper elementary through high school. Two of her favorite classes in high school, from which she graduated in 1956, were modern dance and home economics. She loved dancing, but said her life goal was to be a housewife and mother. She accomplished both, and more.
Before meeting her husband Warren at her workplace, Bobbie was a bookkeeper for a women's clothing shop in Long Beach, California. Her boss was the store manager, who was also Warren's father. Warren had started working at the store as an assistant manager after a brief stint in the military, and a half year as a junior agent for a talent management company. Bobbie and Warren began dating, and married in September 1964. They had two children: daughter, Sydney, and son, Charlie.
Warren's career moved the family from California to Washington State, then back to California, and one more move back to Washington where he and Bobbie continued raising their children.
When Sydney and Charlie had reached their early teens, Bobbie and Warren decided that Bobbie would return to the workforce. Bobbie set her sights on Kmart, which was very near the family's home, and a store and company she liked and respected. After many visits to the store manager to convince him that she would be an asset to his staff (which finally lead to an interview) Bobbie embarked on her 23 year vocation with Kmart. Bobbie maintained the children's and women's clothing departments for most of her time there, and was a fill-in cashier, as well.
After Bobbie retired from Kmart, Bobbie and Warren tried true retirement in Tucson, Arizona, enjoying desert living for three years before returning to Washington to be closer to their children and their families. In September 2014, they celebrated 50 years of marriage. Sadly, Warren passed away just a few months later after a brief illness. An opportunity to start life afresh presented itself to Bobbie: moving to the Chicago area where son Charlie had relocated.
Unfortunately, when her health began to decline over the first few years there, Bobbie and her family made the difficult decision to move her into long term nursing care to manage her challenging medical conditions. She had been receiving wonderful care at the facility for going on four years at the time of her passing. Every staff member loved Bobbie, especially Lea, who was her frequent nurse for much of the time she was a resident.
Bobbie will be missed by her daughter Sydney (Shawn), son Charlie (Karen), and grandchildren Lauren, Bryant, Sarah, Noelle, Hannah and Sophie. Along with her husband Warren, Bobbie was preceded in death by her parents, and her sister Betty.
Bobbie's family is planning a private burial service and celebration of life in her honor.
