Obituary

Audrey Scott, age 90, a resident of Wheaton, IL, died Sunday, January 27, 2013, at Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield, IL. She was born March 11, 1922 in Newcastle upon Tyne, England.

Audrey enlisted in the Women's Royal Navy in 1943 and was promoted to the position of Petty Officer Wren the following year. Audrey served in the postal branch of the service and in the days leading up to D-Day (unbeknownst to her at the time) she recalled more and more ships collecting in the area. On the eve of D-Day, she and her fellow Wrens received word that they were to get every piece of mail out to the ships regardless of how long it might take. To their astonishment, every ship was gone the next morning, having moved out seemingly without a sound. D-Day had commenced. At the end of World War II, Audrey resumed her career as a secretary with Merz & McLellan, a leading electrical engineering firm in Newcastle upon Tyne, until immigrating to the United States in April of 1956. Upon arrival, Audrey quickly went to work for Sargent & Lundy, a national engineering firm headquartered in Chicago, Illinois. Audrey remained with Sargent & Lundy, holding a variety of positions including executive assistant to the General Counsel, for the balance of her long career, retiring in 1987. Audrey was also a member of the Daughters of the British Empire, an organization whose primary objective is to raise money to support retirement/nursing facilities including the British Home in Brookfield, Illinois. Audrey enjoyed a wide range of interests that often coincided with her love for travel, for example, becoming interested in the Knights Templar, off she went to Malta. A sweet and kind lady that always loved, and was much loved by, her family and friends.

She is survived by her sister-in-law, Thelma Scott; her nieces, Sherryl Scott, and Sara Moser; a grandnephew, Collin Scott; and a grandniece, Ann.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Mildred and Thomas Scott; her brother, Donaldson Scott; and her nephew, Gordon Scott.

Services and interment are private.
