Audrey M. Congdon's Obituary
Audrey Mirace Congdon, age 92, a resident of Carol Stream, IL, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, April 20, 2016, at Johnson Health Care Center at Windsor Park in Carol Stream, Illinois. She was born May 20, 1923, in Amherst, Virginia, the daughter of Homer and Sadie Merl Byers.
She trained at Philadelphia School of the Bible and Hahnemann School of Nursing, Then served as a nurse in Hahnemann Hospital of Philadelphia. Her further training for missionary service was at Grace Theological Seminary.
She married Rev. Garth Congdon in 1954 and they pastored Zion Bethel Church in Monticello, Indiana from 1954 until 1960. In 1960, they began missionary service in Africa with The Evangelical Alliance Mission. From 1960 to 1961 Audrey was a nurse at the Franson Christian High School in Swaziland. In 1961, she served a year as the nurse at Vryheid Children's School in The Republic of South Africa. Her longest posting was from 1961 until 1978 at Union Bible Institute in Rustenburg, South Africa. Their last four years in Africa she served in a hospitality position for TEAM near Johannesburg, South Africa. After returning to the United States in 1981, she served in an advisory position at the Carol Stream Community Center.
Since 1981, she has been a resident of Carol Stream and attended Wheaton Evangelical Free Church where she has been members of the Kupples Klass.
She is survived by a son, David (Kim) Congdon of Lexington, Illinois, her cousin, Doris Sullivan and nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her two dear sister-in-laws, Betty Byers and Elizabeth Schoonover.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Garth Dalmain "Dal" Congdon, a daughter, Deborah DiNicolantonio, three brothers, Merideth, Lyle and Ronald Byers and her parents.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 7 at 2:30 p.m. at Windsor Park in Carol Stream. Interment will be held at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, Illinois.
