Astrid W. Petersen, age 94, a resident of Windsor Park Manor in Carol Stream since 2005 and formerly of Glen Ellyn for 55 years, died on Sunday, July 12. She was born on August 10, 1914, at home in Chicago to Carl and Ida Worgren.
As a young woman, she faithfully served the Lord as an active member of her church, attended Moody Bible Institute, and played in the Salvation Army Ukulele Band. She worked as a key punch operator at Country Life Insurance Company, where she met her future husband, Roy Petersen, whom she married on August 24, 1940. In the early years, their home church was Central Avenue Baptist Church in Chicago. In 1950, they moved to Glen Ellyn, where she raised their three children. She held leadership roles with Chicago-area Christian women's organizations. She also worked at Pioneer Girls headquarters and Conservative Baptist Foreign Mission Society in Wheaton. She attended the First Baptist Church of Glen Ellyn for many years, as well as Evangel Baptist Church in Wheaton.
Every summer, Astrid vacationed at Gitche Gumee Bible Camp in Eagle River, Michigan, with her husband and children. She enjoyed singing and playing the piano, harmonica, ukulele, and guitar. She also shared her passion for God's word by writing poetry. She stayed active in her later years by regularly hiking with her friends on the Illinois prairie paths.
She is survived by three children, Roy David Petersen of Decatur, GA, Daniel Carl (Nadine) Petersen of Littleton, CO, and Deborah (Patrick) O'Malley of Sparta, NJ; four grandchildren, Carl (Kelin) Petersen, Elsa (Isaac) Fluss, Megan O'Malley, and Caitlin O'Malley; and two great-grandchildren, Katherine and Rebekah Fluss. She is also survived by her niece, Bonnie (John) Koch of Elizabethtown, PA, whom she raised for the first several years of her life. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and one sister, Elsa (Rev. Russell) Haggard.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, July 15 at 1:00 p.m. at Evangel Baptist Church, 1900 Manchester Road, Wheaton. Friends may visit with the family from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Glen Oak Cemetery in Hillside. A memorial service will be held on Thursday at 2:00 p.m. at Windsor Park Manor in Carol Stream.
