IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Arlisle Felten
Beers
May 30, 1927 – October 22, 2022
Arlisle (Arlie) Felten Beers, 95, died October 22, 2022 at Central Dupage Hospital, Winfield, IL as a result of injuries sustained in a car accident caused by another driver.
She was born in Sheboygan, Wisconsin on May 30,1927 to William and Matilda (Rudy) Felten. Arlie graduated from Sheboygan H.S. in 1945, attended Wheaton College, and worked at the Sheboygan Clinic and the U.S. Gypsum Company, until making her life work her family and home.
Arlie had a lovely voice, singing with her sisters around the kitchen sink, at Sheboygan Memorial Hospital on Sunday afternoons and at other local events. During the war they had a radio program called The Victory Girls. Arlie's singing voice led her to her future husband, Gilbert Beers, when he saw her sing with her sisters in a trio on the Pierce Chapel stage at Wheaton College. They would later watch their children and even great grandchildren perform on that same stage. The sisters took their trio to a new level when they all got married on the same day in a triple wedding, August 26, 1950.
Arlie, or Mutti, as she was affectionately called, was the kind of warm, humble, unassuming, listening and caring person that always made people feel at home and cared for. She had a sharp mind and an enviable memory. She cared deeply for others, and was the first to reach out to someone who was grieving, call up friends and family to check in on them, or write a note or letter. She never bragged or tooted her own horn - unless she beat her sisters or children in a good Scrabble game.
Arlie was an avid Scrabble player, and even the best of us found her difficult to beat. She and Gil played daily games of Rummikub and Parchesi. They also loved to travel, and have visited over 80 countries on 6 continents. They made it their goal to take each of their grandchildren on a special trip, introducing them to such places as Switzerland, Malaysia, the Caribbean, Paris, and Alaska.
Arlie was Gil's right hand, typing all of his many dissertations, and the many articles and volumes of books he wrote. She was a devoted mother to her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, attending every concert, play, or sports event, celebrating birthdays, baking Christmas cookies together, and taking time to get to know each one of them. She and Gil started the tradition of an annual family weekend at Turkey Run State Park, which they have continued every year for 56 years. Mutti also made their home, Lothlorien, a magical welcoming place for family, friends and guests, and hosted weekly Sunday family dinners and birthday celebrations even into her 90's. She loved to bring her family together, and would have done anything in the world for them.
Perhaps one of her greatest gifts to her family, was her practice of daily prayer, praying by name for each one of not only her own family of 52, but also the over 200 of her sisters' and brother's descendants as well. She was a great woman of consistent, unwavering faith, even in the face of tragedy, as in the loss of her son. She was a member of Chapelstreet Church (formerly First Baptist Church of Geneva) for 59 years, serving on many committees, singing in the choir, and most likely praying for every one around her.
Words can never adequately describe her beautiful, caring, giving, selfless life and how much she will be missed.
Arlie is preceded in death by her parents, her siblings Polly Allen and Ginny Masterson, and her son, Doug.
She is survived by her adoring husband of 72 years, Gil; children Kathleen (Brad) Cathey, Ron (Becki), Jan (Kevin) Engel, Cindy (Rob) Grondahl; grandchildren Sarah (James) Gordon, Amy (Chris) Mason, Jon (Jennie) Cathey, Jason (Angela) Beers, Katy (Stetson) Butler, Kevin (Leslie) Cathey, Allison (Kyle) Berthel, Emily (Trevor) Terrell, Ryan Grondahl, Luke (Elise) Engel, and Jackie (Nitish) Durbha, and 21 greatgrandchildren.
Burial will be private. A memorial service is planned at Chapelstreet Church.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the Doug Beers Memorial Scholarship Fund , Wheaton College, 501 College Avenue, Wheaton, IL 60187.
