Arlene Audrey Kelly, 88, a resident of Wheaton, IL, died Saturday, January 3, 2015 at Central Dupage Hospital in Winfield, IL. She was born on October 6, 1926 in Milwaukee, WI.
As a young woman in Milwaukee, Arlene enjoyed playing softball and was an award winning athlete at badminton. She married her husband, John Kelly, in 1948, in a double wedding ceremony with her sister, Lila. She worked clerical jobs while raising her young family; relocating throughout the years to St. Louis, Chicago, and Atlanta with John working his way from the Milwaukee police department to the U.S. Treasury Department. In her middle age, Arlene was diagnosed with diabetes. Back to Chicago again finally settling in Wheaton, IL in 1977, she had a few more complications with her health, which she overcame with her typical good humor and strength of character. She was an avid mystery reader with her imagination taking her to remote locations throughout all the books she read. In her later years she became a big fan of Chicago sports teams but none more than the Chicago Blackhawks. She was beaming proudly when the Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup both times recently.
She will always be remembered and sadly missed for the caring, generous, diligent and thoughtful person who gave of herself to family and friends. She will live on through her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Arlene is survived by her daughter, Colleen (Wayne) Henry of Independence, MO; and her three sons, Kevin (Vicki) Kelly of West Chicago, Brian Kelly of West Chicago and Pat Kelly of Wheaton. She is also survived by her eleven beloved grandchildren with whom she enjoyed spending her time, and her ten great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Kelly; her brother, Duane Neverman; her sister, Lila Dixon; and her parents, Arthur and Edith Neverman.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, January 10, 2015 from 4-8 p.m. at Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St., in Wheaton, IL. Services and interment are private.
