Andrew J. Scittine, age 73, a resident of Westchester, died Tuesday, April 18 at the Westchester Healthcare Center as a result of complications due to long-term diabetes. He was born on October 24, 1932 in Melrose Park, to Peter and Rose Scittine. He attended Melrose Park Grammar School and Proviso High School in Maywood. He graduated from Greenville College, Greenville, IL, in 1962 and received a Master's Degree in school administration from Concordia Teachers College, River Forest, IL, in 1976.
Mr. Scittine taught school in District 89 for 25 years. He taught intermediate grades at Melrose Park School for 14 years and served as student council coordinator. He was assistant principal at Emerson School. Then he returned to Melrose Park School and taught Title 1 Reading. He also served as President of District 89 Teachers' Council. Andy was a member of District 92 (Westchester) School Board and the of Proviso Township Mental Health Commission. He was a long time member of Kiwanis Club of Melrose Park, where he served as secretary and later as president. He also served as Easter Seals March of Dimes chairman.
Andy is survived by one daughter, Michelle (Gary) Silver of Palatine, two grandsons, Austin and Keaton, three sisters, Rose (the late Rev. Bruce) Meads and Pat (the late Hank) Burbridge of Spring Arbor, MI, and Dorothy (W.J.) Storey of Muskegon, MI, brother-in-law, Marvin Sellberg of McPherson, KS, many nieces, nephews and cousins galore.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Vincent, and sister, Marie Sellberg.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, April 24, 10 AM at Melrose Park Free Methodist Church, 9th St. and Elsie Dr. in Melrose Park, IL. Friends may visit with the family from 9 AM until the time of the service.
Interment will be held at Spring Arbor Township Cemetery in Spring Arbor, MI, on Tuesday
at 10 AM.
