Allen E. Schroeder, age 85, a resident of Monee and recently of Village Woods in Crete, died peacefully on Thursday, August 2, 2012, at Franciscan St. James Health Center in Chicago Heights. He was born on July 21, 1927 in Chicago to Otto and Lillian Schroeder.
Al grew up on the south side of Chicago. On August 27, 1949 he married June Biggers. They lived in Worth for 15 years until moving to Palos Heights, where they lived for over 35 years. After college he started in construction with Kats Construction, where he developed lifelong friendships. He also worked for many years in the garbage industry and after retirement worked in various jobs because he always wanted to keep busy. He continued to work at his church even after he was 80.
For many years, he enjoyed singing with "Men of A Chord" a men's choir that performed at numerous churches. He loved fishing, especially when it was with his grandchildren. Over the years, he showed his family most of the United States with a motor home. He was a lifelong White Sox fan.
He is survived by three children, Judy (John) Eddlemon of Gary, Indiana, Jim (Angie) Schroeder of Country Club Hills, and Jon (Laura) Schroeder of Oak Lawn, 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Marilyn (the late Norman) Buller; and his sister-in-law, Ruth (the late Gordon) Schroeder.
In April, he was preceded in death by his wife June.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, August 5, from 3 to 7 p.m. at Trinity Evangelical Christian Church, 26900 S. Will Center Road, Monee, IL 60449, where a funeral service will be held on Monday at 10:00 a.m. Interment will take place at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, Illinois at 1:30 p.m. on Monday.
