Obituary

Dr. Alan Johnson died at home on November 5, 2018. Alan was born in Elmira, New York on June 4, 1933 to Frank and Pearl Johnson. He was the 4 th child and the first son. His mother died when he was three and he went to live with his sister Madeline. He lived in MI, AZ and CA - where he graduated from Van Nuys High School and where he originally met Marie Boscaino Johnson. He came to know Jesus Christ as his personal savior at 19 years old after reading his grandfather's Bible. He earned an associates degree in Chemistry and Physics from LA Valley College. He was in the Air Force and taught ground control radar. He attended University of Mississippi at the Gulf Coast Laboratory. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology at Bryan College in TN. He went on to attend Dallas Theological Seminary from 1957-1964 where he graduated with a ThM in Old Testament Semitics and a ThD in New Testament Literature and Exegesis. He did post graduate studies at Cambridge, Oxford and Duke Universities.

Alan taught at Moody Bible Institute from 1964-1969 and taught at Wheaton College from 1969-2000. He was a passionate teacher and considered teaching a ministry. He began the Wheaton in Israel Program in 1972. He also started the Center for Applied Christian Ethics in 1986 and started the Life Long Learning Center at Windsor Park as well as their Biblical Studies Library. He had a long involvement in the Jewish-Christian dialogues in June of each year in Washington D.C.

Alan and his family lived in Wheaton for 46 years and have resided at Windsor Park for the past 8 years.

He has been married to his high school sweetheart, Marie "Rea" for 64 years. They have four daughters:

Jan (Don) Magary Swierenga (Phoenix, AZ), Kris (Andrzej) Szremski (Winfield, IL), Lynn (Ben) Baker (Seattle, WA) and Lisa Brewer (Indianapolis, IN).

He has 19 amazing grandchildren and 6 really cute great grandchildren.

Alan was preceded in death by his parents Frank and Pearl Johnson, his three sisters Madeline Wright, Lois Shaden and Eleanor Klingsten and son-in-law Dr. James Magary.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Immanuel Presbyterian Church for the shipping of Alan's library to the Bangui Evangelical School of Theology (B.E.S.T.) in Africa, c/o Immanuel Presbyterian Church, 29 W 260 Batavia Road, Warrenville, IL 60555.

A Funeral Service will be at Immanuel Presbyterian Church, 29 W. 260 Batavia Rd., Warrenville, at 10 a.m. Saturday, November 10, 2018.
