IN LOVING MEMORY OF
A.J. "Woody"
Monroe
February 7, 1929 – September 7, 2023
A.J. "Woody" Monroe, a beloved resident of Roselle, Illinois, passed away peacefully on September 7, 2023, at Crescent Care in Elgin, Illinois, at the age of 94. He was born on February 7, 1929, in Chicago to his loving parents, James and Margaret Monroe.
Woody's life was marked by a rich tapestry of experiences and contributions. As a young man, he grew up in Chicago, where he discovered his passion for boxing at the Boys Club of America, showcasing his determination and talent early on. At the tender age of 17, he enlisted in the United States Army during World War II, serving valiantly as a Paratrooper for the 11th Airborne in the Asian Theater. His service to his country was marked by courage and commitment.
Following the war, Woody embarked on a journey of family and career. He married and became the proud father of a son. Initially, he worked as a cab driver in the bustling streets of Chicago, eventually finding his calling with Martin Oil Company, where he excelled as a district manager. Later in life, he dedicated his efforts to serving the State of Illinois.
On February 11, 1960, Woody found lasting love when he married Sonia "Sonni" Pearson. Together, they raised a family and shared their lives in Chicago, Milwaukee, and eventually, Roselle.
Woody was a man of many passions. He found solace and creativity in crafting stained glass, a hobby that brought beauty into the lives of those around him. A dedicated community leader, he immersed himself in local politics, serving as a Republican Committeeman and contributing his wisdom as a member of the Roselle Village Board for eight years. His altruistic spirit also shone through in his membership with the Roselle Lions Club and his role in leading Tia Chi at the Senior Center.
In his leisure time, Woody was known to enjoy the thrill of gambling, whether it was with cards or at the slot machines. His zest for life was contagious, and he shared countless memorable moments with friends and family in these pursuits.
A.J. "Woody" Monroe is survived by his devoted wife, Sonia, and their four children: Jeff Monroe of Grayslake, Mickey (Marge) Monroe of Pearl City, Kimberly (Dan) Bird of Carol Stream, and Lisa (Bob) Kowalczyk of Carol Stream. He leaves behind a legacy of love and warmth in the hearts of his 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his grandchild, Michael, his brothers, Charles, Martin, and Robert, and his sister, Margaret.
