Dr. Arthur Frank Holmes
(March 15, 1924 - October 8, 2011)
Arthur Holmes, emeritus professor of philosophy at Wheaton College, died on October 8. Born in 1924 in Dover, England, he served in the Royal Air Force during World War II and came to the United States in 1947. He graduated from Wheaton College, earned his Ph.D. at Northwestern University, and taught philosophy at Wheaton College for 43 years, serving for 30 years as department chair, before retiring in 1994. He authored or edited 14 books and numerous articles related to Christian perspectives in philosophy and to Christian higher education, participated in founding the Society of Christian Philosophers, and lectured across the country in Christian colleges. His numerous recognitions include two Wheaton College “Teacher of the Year” awards, a 1987 -88 “Illinois Teacher of the Year” award, the Coalition for Christian Colleges and Universities’ “Mark Hatfield” award, and two honorary degrees. An active member of Immanuel Presbyterian Church in Warrenville, he is survived by Alice, his loving wife of 62 years, and by their two sons, Paul (Laura), of Stillwater, Minnesota, and Mark (Jennifer), of Galesburg, Illinois. To his six grandchildren, Evan, Carter, Graham, Emma, David, and Bailey, he was simply “Papa”, and was very well loved indeed. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, October 23, at 2:00 p.m. in Pierce Chapel at Wheaton College, 501 College Ave, in Wheaton, IL. Interment will be private. The family requests that any memorial gifts be directed to the Arthur F. Holmes Endowed Chair of Faith and Learning at Wheaton College, 501 College Avenue, Wheaton, IL 60187.
