Roger I. Oslund, age 78, a resident of Wheaton, IL, died peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Saturday, January 19, after a very brief battle with cancer.
He was born February 5, 1934 in Chicago to Ragnar and Mildred Oslund. Roger graduated from Niles High School in 1952. In 1953 Roger enlisted in the United States Navy as an equipment Patternmaker. He graduated as class Honor Man and was assigned to the USS Bryce Canyon AD 36 Destroyer Tender repair ship. He served in the Navy for four years. His experience in the Navy led him to study mechanical engineering at Northwestern University where he graduated in 1961. He worked for Teletype Corporation in Skokie and later Lucent Technologies in Naperville from 1961 until he retired in 1995.
He enjoyed working on a variety of projects and could repair most anything. He loved his family and was devoted to his eight grandchildren. He faithfully attended their numerous sporting and musical events.
Roger accepted Christ as his Savior at a Youth for Christ rally when he was in high school which was the beginning of his lifetime service to his Lord. He was a founding member of Skokie Valley Baptist Church, a longtime member of Winnetka Bible Church, and most recently a member of Community Fellowship Church in West Chicago where he served as a deacon and was involved in several church groups.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Cynthia Erickson Oslund, two children Sheroll (Kevin) Ritchie of Wheaton and Jeff (Alison) Oslund also of Wheaton, 8 grandchildren, JJ (Michelle) Oslund, Erika Oslund, Faith Ritchie, Bridget Oslund, Connor Ritchie, Zach Oslund, Kiersten Oslund, and Ingrid Oslund, and two sisters, Vivian Wright of DeKalb and Ruth (Bill) Smith of Grand Rapids, MI.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Dorothy.
A visitation will be held on Friday, January 25, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St., Wheaton. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 26, 2013 at 11:00 A.M. at Community Fellowship Church, 28W240 North Ave., West Chicago, IL 60185. Interment will be held privately at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery.
